The new Northumbria Health and Care Academy in Cramlington will provide a centre of training excellence for nursing and midwifery staff and allied healthcare professionals. Building works for the training centre, office space and meeting rooms started in 2022. This year the outdoor area will be receiving its finishing touches. A well-being nature walking trail and therapeutic garden put into place to improve the outside space of the health hub. What they needed was a Living Willow Structure.

Sylvan Skills was approached by landscaping architect Alistair Robinson of Evergreen Gardening Services to help with the creation of living willow structures for the therapeutic garden area. We were delighted to support the project with our expertise, needed materials and a workforce to shape the structures.

It took about 2500 willow cuttings to create the dome, winding willow tunnel and screening structures which form part of a children’s play zone. They add playfulness and a sense of adventure to the garden. A storytelling area consisting of a storytelling chair and other seating accommodation is also featured.

It took about a month and a team of four people to complete the living willow structures. When visiting the garden a few weeks later the planted willow had already started to sprout. It will soon make a vivid green addition to the trees and flowers on site.
