Long nights and colder days offer more opportunities to be creative in a cosy setting, possibly making Willow Christmas Angels). Why not get together to learn new skills with likeminded people in your community? The goal of the Rural Touring Scheme is to deliver art events and creative activities to small rural communities. Rural venues, volunteer promoters and performers light up village halls and community spaces. Thus contributing to a healthy, happy and vibrant village life.

Arts Council England Funding

Thanks to an increase in funding from Arts Council England creative events like willow weaving or wire sculpture were offered for the first time in an autumn season. Sylvan Skills was given the opportunity to offer willow weaving workshops as part of the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme. A total of 11 workshops in villages all over Northumberland provide a platform for people to create a Christmas themed willow sculpture. The willow angel forms a beautiful Christmas decoration which can also be used for plants to grow up in the summer. The half day workshops, suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience, are being held in places like Crosby Ravensworth Village Hall, The Community Hall at Grizebeck, Edmundbyers Village Hall, Wark Town Hall & Mechanics Institute, Lesbury Village Hall and many more.

A maximum of 10 people per workshop ensures that each participant is well looked after, receiving prompt support when needed. As usual Sylvan Skills is providing all materials to create the Christmas angels. With willow sourced from local sites the workshops are as sustainable as possible. Participants leave with a self-made Christmas decoration, made close to home using local willow. They enjoy working with their hands, making something to take home with them. The four hours offer plenty of time for everyone to finish their angels, those with additional creative energy have the opportunity to also make some Christmas stars.
Ruth is teaching the workshops together with Nicky of NiRo Wood.
